The national airline of Japan, as well as their official flag carrier, Japan Airlines Corporation, or JAL, is the biggest airline operator in the whole of Asia and is a member of the Oneworld global airline alliance. Its headquarters in Japan can be found in Shinagawa, Tokyo while its US-based headquarters is in the greater Los Angeles area.

Areas Serviced and Hubs

Going to and from Japan is made much simpler with JAL's wide array of locations serviced. It has a total of 125 destinations serving domestic and international flights going to Europe, Asia, Oceania, and North and South America. Going abroad is also made convenient since the airline also has destinations to the top cities abroad. Top international locations serviced by the airline are Los Angeles, California; London, United Kingdom; New York City, New York; San Francisco, California; and the Hawaiian Islands. Its hubs include Narita International Airport, Tokyo International Airport, Kansai International Airport, and Osaka International Airport, which are all in Japan.

Popular Routes

Popular routes offered by the airline are domestic flights going to and from Osaka and Kansai. International trips going to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco are also quite popular.

Frequent Flyer Program

The airlines' largest frequent flyer program is JAL Mileage Bank. Like other frequent flyer memberships, it also follows a set of rules. For JAL Mileage Bank, if a member does not accumulate mileage or remains inactive at zero mileage for 36 consecutivemonths, JAL may withdraw or cancel the membership of the member, and all of the mileage accumulated by the member will expire.

Cabin Amenities and Classes

Like all other airlines, JAL has a wide variety of choices when it comes to cabin classes. Domestic flights offer Economy class, Domestic First Class, and a Domestic Business Class known as Class J. For international flights, aside from the Economy class, JAL has introduced an Executive Class Shell Flat Seat Neo, and their First Class JAL Suite which is 20% roomier than the previous First Class Skysleeper Solo.

The in-flight JAL entertainment system is called MAGIC which features a credit card phone, movies system, destination guides along with onboard instructions on how to complete immigration cards, active aircraft status and games. For economy class passengers, movies automatically start once the aircraft reaches cruise levels while Executive and First Class passengers have full control.

Baggage Policy

Every passenger is allowed to carry two (2) checked bags which must conform to the requirements set per cabin class. For First and Executive class passengers, each bag must not exceed 62 inches in length and 70 lbs in weight. For Economy passengers, the same rule also applies but the length of two pieces when combined must not exceed 107 in. With infants riding on infant fare, baggage is limited to only one bag of 45 inches in length and one extra baby accessory like a folding infant stroller or a portable infant rocking cradle. Baggage exceeding the allowed weight will be charged an equivalent of 1.5% of the economy airfare per kilogram of excess.

    Airline Codes

Its International Air Transport Association (IATA) reservation code is JL. On the other hand, its International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) airline designator is JAL. It carries the Flight ID or call sign of JAPAN AIR.
